Drawing Masterclass with Jake Attree

£65.00

Sunday 22 November 2026 · 10am–1pm
Nina Hunter Gallery & Collectors Lounge
£65 per person · Limited to 8 places · All materials supplied

Join artist Jake Attree for an intimate three-hour drawing masterclass exploring the character of Saltaire through line, gesture, nature and landscape.

The morning will begin with Saltaire’s architecture as our subject, using the distinctive buildings and spaces of the village as a starting point for exploring observation, proportion and composition.

From there, Jake will encourage us to loosen our relationship with line, moving away from overly controlled drawing and towards more instinctive, gestural marks. We’ll explore how a drawing can have personality and character, and how a few expressive lines can communicate far more than a highly finished image.

The session will also turn to nature and landscape, looking at different ways of responding to organic forms, trees, foliage, the river and the surrounding landscape.

This is a workshop about looking, responding and finding freedom in drawing.

Artist Encounters

With Jake Attree

The morning will begin with Jake sharing a selection of sketchbook drawings alongside some more finished works, offering an insight into how an initial observation or idea can develop into a larger, more resolved drawing. The artist will talk through some of the decisions and discoveries that shape this process, from the first marks on the page to the finished work.

Jake will then demonstrate how he begins a drawing, working from photographic sources and exploring ways of finding structure, character and expression through line. While November may not be the most forgiving month for working à la plein air, the photographs will provide a starting point for looking closely and responding to place.

Students will then have time to develop their own drawings, with Jake offering individual guidance and conversation as the work takes shape. Along the way, he’ll share examples of other artists’ approaches to drawing, bringing in a little art historical context and encouraging students to consider the many different ways a drawing can be made.

The emphasis throughout will be on looking, experimenting and allowing the drawing to develop rather than striving for a predetermined outcome.

At the end of the session, students will also be warmly invited to continue the conversation with a visit to Jake’s studio at Salts Mill.
