1-Year Intense
Artist Development Course
Starts 21st of September 2026 | Drawing | Painting | Mentoring
250/month (September–June)
This 3-year-long programme offers a rigorous and immersive education in the fundamentals of classical drawing, rooted in observational practice and traditional techniques. Designed for artists seeking to deepen their visual language, refine technical skill, and develop a cohesive body of work, this course provides a structured yet personal path, ready to start a career in the arts.
This intensive programme is designed for artists who already possess a solid foundation in drawing and are ready to develop a distinctive personal style and professional practice.
The course begins with an assessment of each student's existing skills, identifying strengths as well as any habits or mannerisms that may be limiting further progress. From there, students work through a tailored programme of study, refining their technical ability while exploring new approaches, subjects, and mediums in line with their artistic goals.
With an emphasis on discipline, sensitivity, and sustained observation, students deepen their understanding of drawing and painting while developing a more individual visual language. Classes are taught in small groups, allowing for personalised guidance, regular mentoring, and constructive critique throughout the year.
This programme is ideal for committed artists seeking to elevate their work, strengthen their artistic identity, and pursue a serious career in the arts.
Schedule: Twice-weekly sessions from September to June;
Mentoring: 1-hour mentoring session and portfolio assessment with Nina Hunter every 6 weeks; available for bespoke feedback throughout the course;
Fees: from £250 per month for 10 months, depending on the choice of the subject of focus.
Location: Saltaire Art School

The first six weeks are dedicated to understanding each student's current level, artistic interests, strengths, and long-term ambitions. During this period, students settle into the studio environment while tutors assess technical ability and identify any habits or mannerisms that may be limiting progress.
Working primarily from still life and the live model, students begin refining observation, drawing accuracy, composition, and visual sensitivity. This phase establishes a clear direction for the remainder of the programme and ensures that future development is built upon a strong and conscious foundation.
-
Having established a clear understanding of each student's abilities and aspirations, the next stage focuses on deliberate artistic decision-making. Students begin to narrow their choice of subject matter, explore mood and atmosphere, and identify the themes that resonate most strongly with them.
Work may continue through drawing or progress into painting, depending on individual goals. Technical development remains important, but increasing attention is given to personal interpretation and artistic intention.
-
The central phase of the programme is dedicated to the development of a distinctive artistic voice. Students work with their chosen medium, exploring techniques, processes, and subject matter that align with their interests and ambitions.
Through practical projects, critiques, and experimentation, students are encouraged to move beyond imitation and begin creating work that reflects their own unique perspective.
-
The final stage focuses on consolidating a cohesive body of work and strengthening professional direction. Students continue developing their individual style while benefiting from regular mentoring sessions designed to provide personalised feedback, guidance, and accountability.
Attention is given not only to artistic growth but also to preparing students for life as a professional artist, helping them identify realistic pathways for future development.
-
This programme is intended for serious artists seeking a genuine step forward in their creative careers. Attendance at classes alone will not be sufficient to achieve that goal. Students are expected to dedicate a minimum of three days per week to their artistic practice, both inside and outside the studio.
The development of a professional artist requires sustained focus, discipline, and commitment. Creating art must become a central priority, driven by genuine curiosity and a deep desire to improve.
Alongside practical and theoretical training, students receive guidance in the administrative and promotional aspects of professional practice. Topics include portfolio development, pricing, exhibitions, social media, marketing, client relationships, and other essential tools required to build a sustainable career in the arts.
